Laurel, Miss – Last night, residents gathered in Laurel for a candid and empowering conversation about the voting rights challenges shaping our democracy, and the room was full of people ready to listen, learn, and act.

The discussion brought attention to critical issues, including the SAVE and SHIELD Acts, two pieces of legislation with significant implications for voter access, as well as the landmark case of Louisiana v. Callais, which continues to raise important questions about representation and fairness at the ballot box. Community members walked away with a clearer picture of what these challenges mean for Mississippi voters and what steps they can take to protect their rights.

“Last night in Laurel reminded us of something powerful: when communities are equipped with the truth about their voting rights, they move. They engage. They act. That’s the power we saw in that room.” says Keenon Walker, Regional Coordinator (South MS).

A heartfelt thank you to the Laurel Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the City of Laurel Ward 7 for hosting this important evening at the historic Oak Park Alumni Building. Your commitment to civic engagement and community empowerment made this gathering possible, and your leadership continues to inspire action across our region.

Evenings like this remind us why community matters. When we understand the stakes, we don’t sit on the sidelines; we show up, ask questions, and hold the line for every voter. The energy and engagement in that room last night is proof that our community is paying attention, and that is something to be proud of.

The conversation doesn’t stop here. Have questions about your voting rights? Call our voters’ rights hotline at 833-678-4321 or visit msvotes.org to learn more, find resources, and stay connected to the issues that matter most to you.
