Mississippi Votes Joins National Democracy Coalition to Register Voters Ahead of Election 2024

JACKSON, Miss. – September 16, 2024 – Beginning September 16, 2024, Mississippi Votes will join thousands of organizations nationwide in celebrating National Voter Registration Week, part of a collective effort to ensure every eligible American is registered to vote in time for Election 2024.

With over 5 million new voters registered since the initiative began in 2012, National Voter Registration Day has become a vital push to get the country #VoteReady. This year’s campaign is especially crucial, marking the final large-scale voter registration effort before the highly anticipated 2024 presidential election.

“National Voter Registration Day is more than just a day—it’s a reminder of the sacrifices made for our right to vote,” said Arekia Bennett-Scott, Executive Director of Mississippi Votes. “We extend this observance into a full week, honoring the legacy of Freedom Summer 1964 and continuing the work of those who fought for justice. Our mission is to empower every Mississippian to make their voice heard at the ballot box. We are resolute in our mission to ensure that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to participate in shaping our future.”

Mississippi Votes joins a vast coalition of national, state, and local partners committed to ensuring all eligible citizens are ready to vote. The organization will host events across the state, offering multiple opportunities for community members to register and get informed.

Taylor Turnage, Central Field Coordinator, added, “National Voter Registration Week puts the spotlight on voter access, ensuring that when Election Day arrives, everyone has the opportunity to participate equally.”

Arnica Byrd, South Field Coordinator, said, “National Voter Registration Week is a celebration of democracy and making sure individuals, especially eligible youth, exercise their right to vote by taking the first step by getting registered. We hope the impact increases the number of registered voters and ignites a drive to the polls on election day.”
