Mississippi Votes Reaches Every Region of the State During National Voter Registration Week
STATEWIDE, Miss. — National Voter Registration Week is over, and Mississippi Votes spent every day of it where Mississippians live, learn and gather. Volunteers, students and organizers showed up in communities across the state, from the Gulf Coast to the Delta and from the Capital City to North Mississippi, on college campuses, at high schools, in libraries, in nursing homes and in neighborhoods, helping people register to vote and get clear answers ahead of the November 3 general election.
The week was about conversation as much as paperwork. Organizers talked one on one with voters about deadlines, where to vote and what to do if something goes wrong at the polls. They met first time registrants and longtime voters alike, and made sure everyone left knowing they had someone in their corner.
“I watched young people in every corner of this state give their time to make sure their neighbors were ready,” said Arekia Bennett-Scott, Executive Director of Mississippi Votes. “Mississippi knows better than anyone what the vote cost. People here were beaten, jailed and killed for it. When someone tells me their vote doesn’t matter, I tell them that history says otherwise.
Registering is how you get a say in your schools, roads, hospitals and who leads your community. If you are not registered, other people make those decisions for you. We are going to keep showing up until every eligible Mississippian knows their voice counts and has what they need to use it.”
Mississippi’s voter registration deadline is October 5, two weeks away. Residents can check their registration status, update their information or register at sos.ms.gov/yall-vote. Visit msvotes.org/ballot-ready to make a plan to vote, view a sample ballot and learn what to expect before heading to the polls. Mississippi Votes is encouraging anyone who has moved, changed their name or never registered to take a few minutes now instead of waiting until the last day, and to talk with family, friends, classmates, coworkers and neighbors about doing the same.
Mississippi Votes will keep working year round to provide nonpartisan voter education, voter registration, election protection and civic engagement opportunities, and to help every Mississippian step into November ready, informed and proud to be counted.
